Photographer's Note

This is another one of my Jing Wan Lu shots ("Lu" just means road) different from the others in that one would never believe that this shot was taken in a major city in China. Jing Wan Road is situated in a highly populated part of part of Changsha there are high-rise apartment blocks s popping up everywhere, thousands of people live and work there. But every now and then, there is an oasis of space, just like this one, an empty piece of land waiting for another big construction company to move in

As you walk south down Jing Wan Lu there is this small plot of land were many of the locals grow vegetables and no more twenty metres away there is this huge farmers market (one of three on this road) were most of the produce grown here probably ends up. The farming here is intensive, and the farmers, who are mostly women, are working there almost all day. They tend their little plots of land with the same kind of fervour that a westerner would tend a much-loved flower garden.

I was wandering around this area one afternoon, just taking a few random shots of the area, when this woman spotted me and yelled something at me, I donít know what she said because she speaking in the local Hunan dialect, but I hope it was something nice.
