Photographer's Note

Street capture under shade of a vege seller in Songpan market who was probably camera shy, reticent & suspicious of a stranger but nothing hides those appealing facial features and her bright green headdress...

Songpan is an attractive ancient walled town at 2900m elevation, located in Aba County, North Western Sichuan. Founded in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) as a military garrison town and strategically it guards the neck of a valley built up against a stony ridge to the west and surrounded on the remaining three sides by 10 metre high stone walls. These walls have recently been restored making it one of Sichuan's few surviving walled towns, though renovations also cleared away some of the old wooden buildings which gave this town so much character. There are four major ethnics who live in harmony; Tibetan Khampas who are the majority followed Hui Muslims, Qiangs and Hans.
