Photographer's Note

Bit of a bizarre picture to post as my 300th from the big country, perhaps.
Then again, China can be bizarre...

LANGMUSI is a remote town on the border between Gansu and Sichuan with two big Tibetan monasteries and great trekking opportunities. As it gets more accessible, it is becoming a bit of a tourist attraction.

One of the more bizarre souvenirs you can buy here, is a large (stuffed? cuddly??) dog. This is one. We didn't buy it. No room for it in our backback, and we don't like dogs all that much, to be honest.

THE TIBETAN MASTIFF is a large Tibetan dog breed (Canis lupus familiaris). Originating with the nomadic cultures of Tibet, China, India, Mongolia and Nepal, it is used by local tribes of Tibetans to protect sheep from wolves, leopards, bears, large mustelids, and tigers.

When spending the night in a tent with a nomadic Tibetan family, we were strongly adviced not to leave the tent at night, as the dogs are let loose at night to protect the yaks. Advice to be followed!
