NINGXIA is one of the smallest provinces of China. It lies in the north, roughly in the middle of the country. It borders Gansu, Inner Mongolia and a small stretch of Shaanxi.

This autonomous muslim region is home to the Hui people, even though there seem to be lots more Hui living outside Ningxia, particularly in southern Gansu and around Xi'an. Their muslim religion goes back to the days of the old Silk Road.

TONGXIN is a small city in Ningxia, which sees very few western visitors. This welder was so hard at work he didn't notice us (at first), even though other locals had already gathered around us.

Our favourite Tongxin anekdote is about a local taxi driver. He stopped to stare at us and then almost drove off when we asked if we could take a ride with him. "I'm sorry, I am too nervous," he shouted. It took a while before we could calm him down and get that ride. A nice man!

NOTICE the safety mask here: folded open cardboard used for packaging cigarettes, with cheap sunglasses sticking through. Not all that safe...
