Photographer's Note

Everybody's favorite Central Asian pastime - Lamb Polo. Ever see a classic polo match? They use a ball. In Tajikistan, they use a lamb. First team to drop it into their respective hole wins the game. This was a large group of Tajikistani farmers enjoying this unique sport after a wedding ceremony just north of Tashkurgan, Xinjiang, off the Karakoram Highway. This valley is just several kilometers from the Tajikistan border with China.

Many of the onlookers were drunk and on several occasion almost got trampled by the horses. Myself included - this shot had the horses stampeding just past me a few seconds later. The lamb, seen dragged in between the two horses, was presumably already dead, but I'm wondering if it did in fact start out alive. We arrived at the festivities towards the end of the action on an early evening as we made our way down to Tashkurgan.
