Photographer's Note

I hope you enjoy this photo and that her eyes speak to you as they do to me each time I gaze at it. I came across this young Kazahk girl on top of a mountain pass in the Nalati Grasslands national park in the Yili prefecture of Xinjiang in China. I believe her family was the keeper of the gate at the pass. She was such a serious little girl and observed us with a sense of indifference, and maybe even a hint of reproachfulness while she sat silently on a horse her dad was holding. As I framed her for the shots a part of me felt like an intruder and another part wanted to bring a smile to her sad eyes. I have never been able to glance at this photo without feeling an elusive mixture of mystery, depth, and sadness.

I am trying to improve my portrait taking skills so please let me know if I should have framed this shot differently. I will be uploading a second photo of the same girl with a different composition for comparison. Any and all comments and suggestions welcomed. Thanks for looking!
