Photographer's Note

Domesticated yaks and a Khampa herder wandering on a small mountain road caught my attention. A vital animal to this ethnic minority who are native to north western Yunnan region not far away from Tibet border.

So itís little wonder that a large part of Khampa's life is dedicated to this animal, renowned for their hardiness.can live up to 25 years anywhere from 3,000 meters to very high altitude. They provide everything from transport for pulling heavy farm machines and transporting large loads through the mountain passes, meat and milk to hair for making ropes and rugs, dung for fuel and wool and leather for yurts, clothing and various other household items...

A high altitude multi purpose hardy beasts, taken in betwen Bitahai and Gyailtang, 3300m elevation

Setting: 130 mm, 1/1250 sec, F4.2, ISO Raw 200, 0748 hrs
