Ni hao?
(Howdy?)
For thousand years, Hani minority people live their farming life with terraced fields extending from mountain to mountain. There was little change, little new, little update. Rarely they have seen strange people from other places to arrive. No tourism industry here. As a result, when foreign travelers show up in town, local residents look at them with round eyes with no less curiosity than the foreign travelers themselves surprisingly view the immensity of fields or lovely colors on the Hani traditional costumes.
Welcome to Yuanyang!
(Photo taken at Yuanyang bus station. This boy has been in line with me while we bought the bus ticket. Later, I found out he was with his mom on same bus with me — just behind my seat — while he was suffering a bad cholera. Even though we failed to break the language barrier, I believe I have been able to read his pain, which made me daring and stupid enough to search my luggage and offered him an adult dose of Imodium and Ciprofloxacin. My risky decision has helped stopping him the effect of cholera, that in turn helped the driver of the bus to not stop for him after a dozen times during our 200-km-trip between Yuanyang to the border of Vietnam in Hekou.)

Extraordinarily vivid colors, clarity, and I love the red characters in the backround. All aesthetics first class. When you add the pathos of your story in the notes, it becomes a very powerful photo document. A really fine picture. Bravo, Francis

Execellent framing and DOF with the blurred silhouette in the background. I love the vivid colors and above all the small dark eyes staring at the photographer !

You've got me again, Thanh!
Both, the boy's eyes and the listless & distracted face of the mother made your picture.
An adult dose of Imodium and Ciprofloxacin for this small boy is overdosed, but Chinese government won't sue you for prescribing drug with photographer license!
Cheers!

Mr. Thanh:
The boy's eyes locked me up: I could not leave him. Plus, the woman's face hurts me with her patience and endurance. Thanks for posting this.

Making a great connection here. We make these kinds of connections all the time with people we pass by, but do we notice? I wonder if the child will remember you. You will remember him/herthanks to the photo. And so will we.

Hi Mr Thanh
I consider I am trapped in this posting of yours.
For photographic part, you offered us a very impressive emotion via the boy's eyes. What did you capture is really a wonderful moment that I am glad to share.
In the other hands, your note placed me in a difficult moment — to be frank with you. I am imaging to have a seat on the same bus with you, and to witness you giving a double-dose medication to the tiny patient, I don't know what kind of advice I should tell (after my 7 years in medical school and decades of practice). To give or not to give?. After reading your story and many feedbacks above, I learned one more thing after years I spent to teach or to administer medical students' exams: "sometimes we should let our conscience to motivate or to govern us".
I hope other TE friends would agree with me. Regards,
Huy V Tran, M.D., Ph. D.

What a courageous decision you dared to make on giving out the prescription to your patient even though you weren't certified!
I wish to know how many doctors (of medicine, of course) among TrekErath members who have passed on their free prescription to people along their treks. Yes, I am positive that I've read some "intros" telling that I have the honor to be in the same... forum with some members who hold the doctorate.
Cheers!
Christine
