Photographer's Note

Lijiang is the main city of the Naxi people (an ethnic minority of China). Like for most minorities in Yunnan, the Naxi (say nashee) have a matriarcal organisation. Women carry out the work. Their apparel is a sign of their work : harnest like (see the picture) with some fur or thick cotton to carry heavy loads. On their back is displayed the sun, the moon and some stars, meaning that their back always faces the sky (day and night) due to the work in the fields or the load they carry. The men, submitted to the working women have an easy life. They are supposed develop their artistic skills (singing, dancing, music, poetry ...) and play. (see this).

In the main square of the city, I saw these women assembled together listening to their Dongba (priest of the Naxi people). The dongba culture is famous (it covers mythology, astrology, magie, history). They are still 40 to 50 dongbas. Some of them work for the cultural institut, translating ancient documents written in hieroglyphs.
