Photographer's Note
An old shot taken in a cantonese market. I think it is said cantonese will cook anything that runs. I wish these 2 unfortunate dogs (male and fenale) had run faster.
Hopefully, i did not assault too many sensibilities by posting this.

This may be an upsetting shot to some, especially us dog owners, but from a strictly TE approach, I like it. It definitely teaches us about the world...the fact is, dogs are eaten in plenty of places, often because other food is not available, meat or vegetable. Markets like this one are the norm in many places.
The angle and composition helps produce an image that is normal to some people, and shocking to others. The blouse is overexposed on glare, and some slight noise can be detected throughout the shot. However, the colors and rich and accurate, and the shot is well-framed.
Images like this have been toss-ups on TE, often as not picked on by people who are not commenting on the photograph but rather on an act or event the photographer did not perpetrate. Interesting post, in my opinion. Capturing the real world, not the ideal one.

I think it is said, that they will eat anything with 4 legs except a table and anything with wings except a plane. You have captured this gross photo well :) It deserves a place in TE.

Oh I had to scroll this page down quickly. I couldn´t see so much of your picture. Though I think it´s a very scary picture, maybe a picture for the saving animals societys. (or something like that)

I does not like this picture but I think is really a subject for TE to know another culture. she have her place because the two animals are shot in their environnement not as a provocation as the bloody rabbit lastly. Some people eat insects...
But it is a sensible subject for végetarians, dogs lovers and other people not chinese. I would prefer you does not continue... (sorry for my approximative english !)

je me souvient d'avoir vu
des chiens en cage au vietnam
qui attendaient devant un restau
oupss ça fait mal
mais c'est aussi une des réalité
d'une partie de l'Asie, je suis content
qu'en Thailande on reserve un meilleur
sort aux chiens

Shock value or culture? The answer is, depends what part of the world you live in. May not always be pretty for some but it's part of the culture for others. I feel sorry for these dogs but this is a good capture of "daily life".

a little bit shocking, indeed.. but travelling is not only going to beautiful places and seeing "happy, poor people". It's also facing the reality.
And it's not always so nice as we would like to have it..
I also like this bold composition, emphasizing the subject greatly.
On the other side, think what Indian people must think of our eating cows? Or muslim/jewish of eating pigs?

i must say that i feel much more shocked by this post than by nudity or things that are not allowed to be shown in your adoptive country.. but let's face it, this also a reality! so it has its place on TE. thanks for it! still is a sad scene...

I'm sad, when I see this picture, but this is true... I know...Asia... other word for me... other culture
berto (77) 2004-11-16 1:14
from a photographic standpoint. the picture is very good. gets its message sent straight to the point.
i do understand people feeling sorry for the poor animals but they are food and they are edible. we're just biased because they're usually our pets instead of food.

Je vais souvent en Asie, et j'ai été choquée par beaucoup de scènes. En voilà une devant laquelle je ne m'habituerai jamais ! La photo est très bien prise Hervé, la réalité telle qu'elle est vécue là-bas, tout simplement.

This shot definetely belongs to TE, just for me as a dog crazy person I have a hard time looking at it and critiquing the image.
Cultural differences are indeed quite strong, many of us westeners don't have a problem with meat factories killing millions of chickens, pigs and cows, many of us don't have a problem with hunting, so the culural shock is quite strong based on our mentalities. I just hope that those dogs haven't been tenderized before they died.
On the other hand you may be surprised to see what you will find out in any of our western dog/cat shelter, animals burnt, scapled, gauged eyes, fried on barbecues, fire crackers up theirs @#[email protected]! so while many dogs and cats in the western world are loved as pets, the numbers that are abused is quite astonishing, .... we just beat them but don't eat them.

I like the instructive side of this photo and I think it belongs to TE. Regarding scruples about eating something or not, we must not forget that all of we belong to the same nature and the end it will be "dust to dust" or "flesh to flesh".
Ask somebody in India about a roast beef.
I think I have never eaten dog, but I heard that some sixty years ago (after the Spanish War) in a restaurant of my city cats were served instead of rabbit.

Good shot, and I agree with the comments about the western world's attitude to animals. Intensive farming, foie gras, animal laboratories are OK, but eating dogs is not.Well done for sharing this.

Nice photo. Looks yummy ;)
Just don't forget that this is another culture!
Maybe in the eyes from someone from the "western cultures" this might look cruel. But what about all the animals in the rest of the world? - or is there a difference between animals?

It is just a matter of culture... at least in this case... probably you wouldn't care too much about pigs hanging in such a way...
But the picture is good

Good shot, and no matter how people react, this is everyday life in big parts of china.

Hi Herve,
That's an excellent documentary and a shocker to many people! The technical quality of the picture is not perfect but the subject is quite good.
I've not eaten one myself but it is said that they taste quite good ;) As far as I'm concerned, dogs, whether they're pets or not, are just animals. If pigs /oxen /chicken (ie. decomposed, burnt/roasted, dead animal bodies) are being eaten everyday so why not dogs?
It's just a matter of cultural relativism... TFS.
Cheers,
CheukHin

Just imagine how shocking would be for hindu to see cow meat hanging like that in an European butcher shop....
Everything is relative, but this is our world. I love the picture because it show me another culture so distant from mine...
Well done, keep on shooting...

As with the last posting everything is relative. My only concern is that death was swift and the meat not wasted. (however I do condemn the use of rare animals for the meat and medicine trade and note this does not apply to the true hunter gatherers societies not yet poisoned by the modern world)
I'm afraid in the western world attitudes are different, meat is put on the plate in greedy proportions and then when the person has had enough the rest disarded. This shows a complete disregard for life any life, I have always appreciated the true hunter who treasures the both life and death of his quarry and brings one to appreciate how the hunter gatherer treads a thin the line between death and life himself in his natural environment and this is fast disappearing. I would abhore any cruelity. You get two points for starting a very important discussion alone

ahhh...you just had to do it...good photo.
I like it for it's content here on TE and not just for the "surprise" appeal of it. It definitely shows a different point of view for people from different parts of the world. It works here, in my opinion, because of the composition and how some of the market is als oshown in the photo. It's grainy but good color and composition. It's something that I have never seen a picture of before so I learned something on TE today - what I learned? - I guess what a dog looks like when cooked.
Good job.

1. Most chineses do not eat dog. The worst place to eat dog is in Guang Dong. They eat almost every animal.
2. The Chineses only eat some kinds of dog. They call them meat dog(or food dog). They raise them for their meat. They won't eat German Sheepherp or Pit Bull terrier etc.
3. They believe dog can help keeping their body warm, so they usually eat dog in winter.
4. Stew dog meat with some herb can improve sexual performance

And I always think what the difference is between a dog and a cow or a pig. Why is this so bad? Because we have them as pets, play with them.
Yep, hard to look at, but it's my own fault, shouldn't buy products animals are killed for.
Thanks Herve, the real TE, even when it's not nice, but knowing you a little bit, I don't think you enjoyed it also.

hey Herve
this is a very shocking image, but from a Photojournalistic POV it does bring out the truth which otherwise wouldnt be known to people. Just the thought that anyone can eat a dog is downright DISGUSTING to me. I mean dogs are one four leged creatures that are shower such unconditional love on us.

Oh, my God... is this chinese hot dogs? So brave shot for TE. Impressive reaction of public. But it is rreal life and part of conception of trekearth: Learning about the world through photography.
Unfortunatelly, I can't to leave to Thailand next winter. Lovely place on the Earth. I had long depression after my vacation in Pattaya.
