Photographer's Note

This nightclub (which I'll leave nameless) in Beijing is popularly known among expats as "The Mongolian Embassy". The reason is simple: with the exception of the bar staff and customers, almost everybody inside is a freelance working girl from Mongolia. This is a photo of the main bar area… the people you can see here are the bar staff and the appropriate red lighting is coming from the bar lights.

As working girl pick up bars go, it does not get much more blatant than this bar. Outside the toilets is a stack of flyers for the Moneygram wire transfer service – it says "In ten minutes your money can be in Mongolia". Later on in the evening you do get some Russian working girls there, so on the reverse side of the flyer is similar information in Russian script. If you were in a hurry, you could probably walk in and then out with a girl in 5 minutes, but most customers prefer to stay a while for a drink or to cosy up with their chosen girl on one of the big sofas. You can see a portrait of Mao overlooking this whole scene - I wonder what he would make of Beijing today.
