Photographer's Note

Sitting on a ledge overlooking the courtyard at Chungba Primary School in Sichuan Province, I glanced over to see this young Tibetan girl looking at me with an expression of utter saddness, the look of a woman of 90, not a child of 6. Without thinking I got out my camera. The result was this photograph.

Chungba is a small village, a single row of houses really, about a four hour drive from Litang. While traveling in the western regions of Yunnan and Sichuan, the group I was with stopped to volunteer at the Chungba Primary School. We spent three amazing days interacting with the 250 students at the school. I like to think they learned as much as we did during those days.

I've chosen not to alter this photograph, except to crop a little off the top. There was a boy looking at the camera in the top right corner of the photo which was distracting.

I'm not totally satisfied with my choice of title. If you have any suggestions, let me know.
