This is an annual affair happen in the first Month of New Year in the Tibetian Calander

Thousands of Tibetan buddhist in The A Ba perfecture in Sichuan. Gather as the first rays of SUNLIGHT strike the giant THANGKA of the BUDDHA, which was unfold on the hillside opposite the Monastery.

Religious unfolding
Tibetan monks unfold a giant thangka, a religious silk embroidery or painting displaying the Buddha portrait, amid snowfall at the Lamasery during the Sunbathing Buddha Festival.

Believers and tourists alike hiked up the mountain in the pale, pre-dawn light, hoping to see the sun light up the thangka.

As well as a Buddha image, a thangka can depict influential lamas, deities, or bodhisattvas, or sometimes a complex mandala.

The procession
The huge painting was carried to the ceremonial site in the early morning by dozens of Tibetan monks.
