Photographer's Note

There is intention to show much noise ... as life on backstreets in China is filled with noise, true daily life, and community interaction. GuZhen is a real small town, perhaps 60,000 or less in rural China. This rainy morning we see sellers and buyers interact as they set out to start their respective days. The morning rains are common this time of year (mid July). The streets are thus washed - and the heat of July brings a steam mist distorting the image as the rain fog envelopes all. Ahead is the full morning meat and poultry market and behind in the distance the Wei river flows to the east adding to the Yellow and the East China Sea.

As I walk past them, the people here welcome me, a rare foreigner. I am greeted by smiles, shy faces, and intense interest. They encourage me to buy and often show their prize sale items. There is a quality of humanness that is genuine. They all know each other as generations take a stand to survive daily life.
