Photographer's Note

Far from city life ... even town life is China's farm life. Here is a group of farm neighbors passing time, retired from the labors of their youth. Mahjong is often the game and played well, strategies passed on from generations past are held close as competitive play is preferred. This farmer offered me dinner and as a guest it was wonderful. After the meal I had time to watch the play and was asked to join in, but my game skills are low and these skilled players would take me without pause. I did sit in for a spell but local dialect and my poor Chinese was without help and I was happy to be relieved of play.

Not often does one get to interact inside China’s heartland. I found the older man across from me a joy as he was always happy and others gave banter with him often. I believe he had a play for every move and it was not always in accord with the other players. He was the quintessential kibitzer, but taken with warm serenity.
