International Beggar

After visiting Chong Kneas Vietnamese Community in 3-2005 and witnessed their condition of living, I reported with a series named Floating Misery and this humble set of postings fell into the attention of some friends in TrekEarth and some of my co-workers as well.

When they learned that I was returning to the location in March 2007, they stepped forward, asking me to receive and relay their donations directly to the hands of recipients, in whichever way I believe the most effective, to the best of my judgment. Unintentionally, I became an international beggar with US$900.00 or 3,645,000.00 Cambodian riel to be delivered.

While in Chong Kneas, based on current price of rice and its availability, I was able to find enough for 90 poorest families. Each family received 25kg of rice plus 10,000 Cambodian riel in cash:

(25 x 1,140) + 10,000 = 38,500 riel/family
38,500 x 90 = 3,465,000 riel

After rice and cash distribution, I still have 180,000 riel (±US$45.00) left. I decided to give this amount to a lady who was suffering diabetes without medicine. Her name is Huot Pham, and her picture will be posted tomorrow. This picture shows Tuan Bui—the Chong Kneas catholic church manager—helping me finalize the cost with the rice dealer whom I paid 2,565,000 riel total.

On behalf of the recipients, I sincerely thank you again for your generosity. May God bless you and return your kindness.
