Within the 12th century city of Angkor Thom are some even older temples that were incorporated into the city. Phimeanakas is the largest of them.
As you can see from the number of steps and the size of the person in the doorway at the top it is quite large.
The temples out of Seam Reap are scattered over a huge area so to get around them needs planning. You can do a tour (no thanks). You can rent a car (expensive if you are staying a week like we did) or a bike (again - no thanks. Or you could hire a tuk tuk which is what we did through our guest house for $A15 a day with use of the tuk tuk as much or as little as you like. Our tuk tuk driver even picked us up and dropped us at the airport.
He also picked up our lunches that were also organised through our guest house.
