Back into my archives again, this time to 2011 and the temples and villages around Siem Reap in Cambodia. Most people have only heard of of Angkor Wat in that region but there are many temples and complexes as well as the crowded and over touristed Angkor Wat.
I'm starting this tour of the region with the ancient Khmer city of Angkor Thom, a sprawling complex of 9 sq km dating from the 12th century and built by King Jayavarman VII. Within the city are several temples and monuments.
This photo, however, is just of the South gate of Angkor Thom with its bridge of statues of gods and demons. Two rows of figures each carry the body of seven-headed naga. As you can see there are no large crowd waiting to enter, although I must admit that I waited for a tour coach to empty its load.
