Photographer's Note

A young boy crosses a field of waste at the Stung Meanchey land fill in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The reason this boy is has a sack over his shoulder is because he will turn in his collection of items to people who pay for it by the kilogram.

An adult male working 12 hours a day at a steady pace will earn roughly 10,000 reil ($2.50) for his efforts.

Children working here are also subject to the same commission rate as the adults, so they work as steadily as they can as well.

If the bag the boy is carrying contains multiple types of plastic, bottles, metal and so forth, the boy may go to a special area a few yards away to separate it's contents with other members of his family.

If the boy has concentrated his collection efforts on one type of plastic bag for example, he will try to fill it so he can then turn it over to other folks who will load it onto a truck for transportation out of the dump site after it has been weighed on a portable scale.
