Photographer's Note
‘Saturday afternoon in Phnom Penh’
High time to include some people on my pictures :)
Saturday afternoon and evening is the time when many residents of Phnom Penh make their way to the banks of the Mekong.
Social gathering and lingering on or around the lawns.
All three pictures are taken in the neighbourhood of the Royal Palace of Cambodia.
Seeing these photos, I was wondering if Cambodia would have declared a lockdown and this is what I’ve found:
The government has ordered a lockdown of all district and provincial borders within the country.
The people are not allowed to travel out of their districts or provinces to halt the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Phnom Penh is an exception where no travel restriction is applied.
In another article I read that the Cambodian New Year celebrations (April, 14th till 16th) have been canceled.
According to the latest reports of today, Cambodia has 122 people who are infected by the virus.
This is not much compared to many countries, but it remains to be seen whether the country has many options for testing its inhabitants.
Hopefully this number is correct.
A lockdown is a terrible thing for the inhabitants of a third world country.
In Europe, there are opportunities to help residents in a system of temporary unemployment.
But not going out in many third world countries means having no opportunity to earn anything and consequently having no money to buy food ...

Bonjour, cher Paul,

Good day Paul.
This shot along with your note somewhat gives a hope for more rational handling of the pandemic crises. People with a positive attitude are most likely to develop stronger body immune system, all comes from the head.
Nice to see people in the outdoor scenery, free and worry less, full isolation is not the best approach to the “human error” created problem.
Have a wonderful Sunday!!!

Hello Paul,
By a funny coincidence I have a photo coming up any day now from the same kind of moment a few hundred meters further up the street. But there are many more persons in your photos than in mine. There are also many more colours and architecture in these photos. The cityscape across the river looks quite different from what I remember from only 12 years ago, most obvious in WS #1. These photos are all nicely composed from well chosen angles with attractive diagonals and marvellous colours.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Paul,
When you read about and see what is happening in other countries, you understand what a catastrophic effect it is having!
In some places the information will be scanty, in others, ridiculous suggestions to cure the virus, are made by national leaders!!
Saturday is obviously a very social day for the Cambodians.
WE can see that the families take picnic mats, as we would take them to the beach or to the riverside.
You have chosen a fine aspect, to capture a full impact of the Saturday afternoon congregation. It also creates a good sense of perspective. The colours are bright but natural.
Keep safe,
Bev :-)

Dag Paul,
John

Hello Paul, interesting pictures that show life in Phnom Penh.
Taken in January, it looks agreeably warm, no-one is wearing a coat; everyone quite happy to sit near the river.
A very colourful scene.
Interesting notes.
Kind regards Jean.

Pozdrav.
Interesantan pogled i trenutak, dobar tekst ...
Lepa zelena trava i drvece.
Paja.
Greeting.
An interesting look and a moment, good text ...
A nice place on the coast for socializing and relaxing. Beautiful green grass and trees.
Beautifully shown with photos in the workshop, well captured moment with visitors.
I'm quarantined, I'm not leaving the apartment.
The dangerous virus changed everything.

Hallo Paul, the picture shows the atmosphere near the Royal palace by afternoon. The residents chill out on rush mats whereas street vendors offer snacks and cold drinks. That place is a meeting point for families, couples and friends along the Mekong river. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hallo Paul,

Hi Paul
Beautiful street photo, much more joyful than your earlier image of rooftops and rubbish and certainly showing a more pleasant side of the country. I love the colours and the diagonal composition.
It's said, that these people, obviously enjoying themselves here, are now confined to their homes by the rules of the lockdown. But the most important aspect, as you say in the note, is that if they can't go out (also, if the lockdown-limited tourists don't come) they can't earn money to even buy food. It's a death sentence, death more certain than that presented by the pandemics.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Paul, This scene reminds me of the view in Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia. I came to the water and I saw a lot of local people everywhere waiting for the sunset. They had chairs, small carpets, whatever. Like here. But the great difference was that they were all in black and white. Awesome colourful composition.
Up to now, mainly the rich countries are affected mostly in COVID-19. Hopefully, the big wave will not come to the third world countries in Asia and Africa.
Stay safe

Dag Paul,
Groet Rob

Hi Paul!
A beautiful image to portray the reality of our day and the reactive behavioural differences in each country regarding this pandemic.
Very well seen.

Hi Paul,
nice daily life scene. You have captured a very busy spot. Locals seem indeed to gather along the river bank.
There are so many of them and they bring in variety of colors. The other side of the river is still lit by the warm rays of the sun. I see people come prepared with blankets and picnics.
I bet you have joined them :)

Missed this one, Paul, so its time for a critique.
Local people on the promenade gave wonderful colors to the scene.
Green on left and far side brown across the river contrasting well upon the whole.
Have a nice new week,
Ike
