Something different today...

This photo was taken while travelling in the beautiful mountaneous countryside of middle Azerbaijan. If you drive along the picturesque Aqsu pass, you will pass numerous small and astonishingly cheap (at least for European standards) open-air restaurants in which the tables are scattered amid the beautiful forest, on the hill slope, and your eyes can enjoy the breathtaking scenery while your taste receptors enjoy truly wonderful meal and wine. As this place is located in just two hour drive from the capital Baku, a lot of weekend trippers come there, so there is no lack of customers. Frequently, guests come in large companies, and for them, there is this special place near the restaurant, where the owner holds several sheep, so the guests can choose which one they want to be grilled. The whole procedure takes then about an hour or two, during which starters and wine can be enjoyed, and after that comes the turn of the fresh kebab...

No emotions. No sentiments. We are all part of nature’s food chain. And I very much doubt that these sheep could understand, let alone protest, their close fate. It just looked, for a brief moment, like they could. Well, I guess in the end I am probably the one who is too emotional and sentimental. Anyway, just wanted to share a slice of life in the corner of the world where the Western supermarket-based culture which seems to wrap even people's minds in sterile plastic, is still in its diapers, and many things are still not that "politically correct"... ;)
