Photographer's Note

This photo was taken of a young girl in an Afghan Sign Language class held in a new school built by SFL in northern Afghanistan. The class began about a year ago and is supported by the Marigold Fund, a small non-profit, that a friend of mine recently started. One thing Marigold is currently doing is working in a couple different locations, teaching deaf children how to read and write, as well as sign and communicate with their siblings. Since nothing like this was going on before the class began, many of the children now attending were then illiterate, not going to school, and had communication skills that were unintelligible. However, sitting in during the class today, I was blown away with how much these children had picked up and learned since the course began. Kids I had seen in the village a year before who couldn't even say "hello", were now speaking sentences to me with their hands and having simple conversations. It really was a sight to see. If you are at all interested, check out Marigold Fund at I'll try and post more from the class in the upcoming days!
