Photographer's Note

I met this little guy, dirt stained face and hands, wandering around a lumber yard with his little brother. When I inquired who they were, the story was their dad worked the yard, so the two boys practically lived there from sun up to sun down. It was easy to imagine their days: spent playing hide-and-seek, racing after each other around trucks/donkeys, sleeping the afternoons away in the shade…real lumber yard rats! So when they passed I said hello, we shook hands, and they laughed and giggled at the attention they were getting. After that we instantly became friends. They were able to understand my rough Dari, and I could comprehend most of theirs. They followed me around as we looked at wood, had pieces cut, loaded onto the truck, etc. Their intrigue then intensified a few minutes before I was to leave when I pulled out my camera. On seeing their image in the LCD screen, they went bizzerk (sp?)...literally running in circles, laughing and tripping over each other. Man, the joy a camera can bring! I still wonder about the two little guys...are they still playing hide-and-seek and climbing over donkeys? Probably. This photo is a good reminder of the amazing smiles I saw that day.
