Photographer's Note

Palawan is the biggest Afghan I have ever met. He once almost broke my back when he gave me one of his famous "bear hug" greetings- picked me right off the ground! He stands well over 6 feet and weighs at least 250 to 300 pounds. His name means "Champion", and I can't think of a name that would fit him better. One time after having lunch on the floor of his house and drinking tea, his daughter came in and sat down on his lap. The size difference between the two, this giant of a man and his little daughter, and how gentle he was with her, struck me and made me want to take this photo. I have good memories of Palawan and his family, and his dear village of Baba Khan Palawan.
