Photographer's Note

Attempting to release a weather balloon in the face of a blizzard. Snapped just before the operator disappeared from view. The first battle is to get the balloon shed doors open, before climbing over the "blizz tail". The turbulence creates an initial area of suction behind before ripping the balloon from the hands. The windspeed was meaning 80+ kts, or about 150kph. Visibility drops to only a few feet once outside. The misty effect is the blowing snow in the air and on the camera lense.

Was the launch a success....? Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.

Scanned from 35mm slide.
