Photographer's Note

Walking into dark hole that stood the taste of time....

This is the entrance of a massive fortified gate known as The Black Gate or Bab Zouila leading thru its 44m long dark passage, incorporated in the 11m massive thick wall to the original Fatimid walled city of Mahdia. In ancient times Mahdia was regarded as the piracy stronghold and this justifies the strong fortifications surrounding the city. This gate was one of the several gates within the 175 m long walls and almost all of it was destroyed by the Spanish but was rebuilt in 1554.

The passage is visually attractive but to achieve a good balance of exposure throughout from where I was standing, is quite a challenge though with strong brightness at the other end of the passage mixed with dim lights, shades and deep shadows. I took several images at various levels of exposure compensation and this is the most acceptable result.
