Photographer's Note

The site of Żłkiew has been inhabited since the 14th century. In 1594, polish Grand Crown hetman Stanisław Żłkiewski fortified the settlement and built Żłkiew Castle.
In the 17th century, it became the royal residence for King John III Sobieski of Poland, and a hub of religious life, arts and commerce.
In the 1930s my grandfather Maksymilian Adam Dobrowolski served in the Stanisław Żłkiewski 6 Cavalry Regiment in Żłkiew.
