Terra-cotta, is an Italian word meaning ‘baked-soil’.Terra cotta art in india has been flourished since the time of Indus valley civilization(2600-1900 BC).
Terracotta art in india is considered mystical because it incorporates within the five elements like air, fire, earth, water and ether.
Temple town Bishnupur of Bankura dist in westbengal is considered as the terracotta-hub. Apart from temples terracotta pottery , articrafts and even jewelleries are made in this traditional art.
In this year at the “Durga Puja” festival(the biggest festival of Bengal) a puja organization in Hooghly imported this art and the artists who had prepared the whole ‘puja mandap’ on terracotta design in the puja site. This one is one of the articrafts .
This one is made by Sri.Brajanath Kumbhakar and Sri.Mahadev Kumbhakar from the village Panchmura about 25km away from Bishnupur Town.
