027 / Doorways in Zanzibar's Stone Town

Zanzibar's historic Stone Town is one of the most evocative places on the planet. It was once the largest trading port on the Swahili coast, its spectacular crystalline harbour full of dhows laden with spices and slaves. Omani sultans, Indian merchants, and African slaves left an indelible mark on this now sleepy jumble of winding alleys and crumbling townhouses. Lanes radiating from the waterfront are perfect hosts for aimless wanders, leading to fascinating sights that range from Sufi seminaries and abandoned Hammams to cutting edge boutiques and the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.
