Photographer's Note

Old Dongola was the capital of the Nubian Christian kingdom of Makuria and is now in the Northern area of Sudan.

The city's origins are still unclear. It was probably founded at the end of the fifth century by one of the first rulers of Makuria as a fortress. This fort was part of a series of such fortifications that were built along the Nile.

In the background you could see some Beehive Tombs.
