Photographer's Note

Morning in Meroe.
The ruins of Meroe are very picturesque. As there is no accomodation the best way is to sleep directly on the sand at the entrance gate. At 8 a.m. the ticket office is open - the entrance fee is 20 pounds (about 8$)

Meroe was an ancient city on the east bank of the Nile approximately 200 km north-east of Khartoum. At the site of the city of Meroe are more than two hundred Nubian pyramids in three groups, of which many are in ruins.
Meroë was the southern capital of the Kushite Kingdom, or Meroitic Kingdom, that spanned the period c. 800 BC - c. 350 AD. First time the piramids of Meroe had been described by several European travellers in the 19th c.
