Photographer's Note

Nature's Valley is part of a nature reserve that is situated along the Garden Route of the Southern Cape coast (29 km from Plettenberg Bay). The Groot River has formed a lagoon at the estuary as it flows into the Indian Ocean. The river forms the western boundary of the Tsitsikamma Forest and Coastal National Park. The safe lagoon gives a wonderful recreation area for canoeing, swimming, sailing etc.
Our guide was a white South African who told us the stories of how he had his holidays in Nature's Valley as a child. However, this was during the apartheid era and black South Africans did not have the opportunitiy to play here. What delighted me about the scene in the picture was the fun that the young people were having in this wonderful place in 2005 without any concerns regarding skin colour. In the WS I show the wider view of Nature's Valley as approached from the top of the cliffs.
