Photographer's Note

Walmer Township

Situated between Port Elizabeth Airport and the suburb of Walmer. Walmer Township is home to about 70,000 indivduals mainly from the indigenous Xhosa Community.

For the most part it looks like classic Township, but in recent years goverment projects have introduced a higher level of services and regenerated some areas of housing.

However many social problems remain, HIV infection rates run at 30%, Unemployemt is over 80%.

[So often in South Africa we were discouraged by the local residents from going out at night, driving alone, parking too far from a restaurant, walking in neighbourhoods. It was nice to be able to visit a township in the company of one of the community and have a chance to just hangout and get a brief glimpse of someone's neighbourhood and gain some understanding of their circumstances. As always, the highlights were the kids and the locals at the shebeen (corner bar).]
