Photographer's Note

I have an absolute passion for the Kruger National Park. It is a vast piece of land and home to some of the world's most amazing animals.
The African Elephant is by far the biggest land dwelling mammal and their numbers in the park is quite healthy. They roam the plains in tight family units led by a matriarch. They are intelligent sensitive creatures who are even believed by some to mourn their dead. This belief sprouts from their habit to cover fallen friends with branches and leaves and to revisit the graves from time to time.
They are fiercely protective of their young and dangerous to people when there are babies in the herd. And believe me, in a contest between an elephant and a car, the car comes off second best!
I took this family's portrait at a water hole close to Satara rest camp. And as always, there is one baby that is not cooperating with the photographer....
