Living mostly near the South African-Zimbabwean border, the Vhavenda are originally from the Congo and the East African Rift, migrating across the Limpopo river during the Bantu expansion.

Though ruled by kings, the position of women in Venda culture is unusual in Africa in that they are encouraged to occupy senior positions in society.
