Photographer's Note

Deadvlei - a "dead marsh" (Vlei being Afrikaans for a type of marsh) sits among the largest sand dunes in the world: a forest frozen in time.

A place where the skies are among the clearest on the planet, Deadvlei has been claimed to be surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 300-400 meters (350m on average, named "Big Daddy").rnrnDead Vlei was once like Sossusvlei, with the river draining into it nourishing desert life and even trees. However, some 900 years ago the climate dried up, and dunes cut off Dead Vlei from the river. It became too dry in Dead Vlei for the trees to even decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun, monuments to their own destruction. The trees, now over 1000 years old, form a barren forest.

When visiting Deadvlei, it is best to visit very early in the morning, before the hordes of tourists get in; and this can only be done if one stays inside the Sossusvlei Park. Or after noon, when most of them have left. Otherwise, you would have people walking all over the place, and it would be impossible to get a shot of the trees without other 'subjects' in the shots. Often, one or two solitary persons would choose to sit under one of these trees to 'read a book'. Though for what reason - I can't imagine; not that it is the most comfortable spot to relax, and the trees definitely have no leaves to provide shade!

As we arrived around 10am, there were already many tourists all over the place, to my dismay. However, after spending around 2 hours in the place, most of the tourists had left as the tour guides do not allow that much time for the visit. This shot was taken slightly after noon. The disadvantage is that when the sun is high in the sky, there would not be any chance of getting dramatic shadows of the trees. The glaring sun can be taken care of using a polarizing filter.
