Photographer's Note

Close to Sossuvlei, the much photographed Deadvlei is an old pan full of calcined trees that has not seen water since the river changed it's course (hundreds of years ago). The trees are stunning themselves, but I liked the shadow against the cracked ground.

I changed this to B&W (interestingly, the original colors were almost B&W!), and sharpened it.

Personally, I can't decide if I really like this shot. I thought I did, but looking at it again, it doesn't evoke any emotion - it makes me feel sort of empty (maybe this is not a bad thing).

I wanted to try something a little out of the ordinary from the typical tourist shot of Deadvlei (the place was crawling with tourists, this was one of the few shots tourist-free).
