Photographer's Note

Essaouira: Originally called "Souira" ("the small fortress"), the name became "Es-Saouira" ("the beautifully designed").
After being abused over many centuries by the Portuguese and French colonists and given a hard time by Spain, England and the Netherlands, this city despite the sufferings of the past is a vibrant, happy and light filled place where its inhabitants are gracious and good humoured. I love its spacious town square, its white houses adorned with blue doors and shutters and even its noisy seagulls. Plus of course the seafood.

Please read about the turbulent history of this charming coastal city in Wikipedia. A few minutes well spent.
