Photographer's Note

Finishing my series with the photo of one of thousands of little geysers that bubble, boil, and fizz all over the Dallol salt flats. Danakil is, allegedly, the "most hostile" place on Earth, but I found is extremely and surreally beautiful. It may be hostile to animal and vegetable life, as the entire area is full of salts and is very hot, but If you listen around you will hear the sounds of the Earth constantly recreating itself. It is a very different kind of life and is overwhelming in its power.
It is not so pristine as we would like to believe, though, and salt extraction in the area has been industrialized - despite the fact that some Afar people still cut salt blocks and transport them in camel caravans to plants to be cleaned and sold commercially. Finally, the Chinese are very busy building a road that will connect Dallol with Danakil - this will definitely shorten tourist trips and save a lot of wear and tear to those poor SUVs.
