Photographer's Note

With her elaborated carved hat made from a gourd, this Banna woman was at the market close to the town of Kay Afar in the Omo valley. The single solid necklace indicates that she is her husbands first wife. Like many of the women of tribal groups in this region her hair is kept in strands using a combination of butter, mud and incense.
