Photographer's Note

The mosque built by Ibn Tulun is the oldest surviving Islamic structure in Cairo. It was completed in 879 AD.

The mosque encloses a large courtyard, which is a surprisingly peaceful place in the centre of this noisy, bustling city. The domed building pictured here has facilities for the ritual washing before prayers.
