Photographer's Note

Amun Ra (Re) became the most dominant Egyptian God over time together with Osiris, father of Horus, and evolved out of an earlier fusion of Min Amun. Typically he wears a double plume hat, carries an ankh, and a 'was', which is a stylized animal head at the top of a long, straight staff with a forked end. You cannot see the forked end here as it as been damaged. I also noticed quite a lot of graffiti on the lower, accessible parts of the image, which I did not notice when I took this. eg, 'Iris? Jollois AN7' 'MMA' 'Beck', 'Uhmel', 'Segato', and another indecipherable, European name, ending also in AN7.

Taken inside Medinet Habu, the Rameses III necropolis. The figure at left is Pharaoh Rameses III making offerings to Amun Ra. His face has been chiselled away by a later 'revisionist' Pharaoh. This was a common occurrence, especially with Akhnaton, the so called Heretic King, and Queen Hatshepsut, resented by her successor, Thutmose I.
