Photographer's Note

These long row cult ram-headed statues called Avenue of sphinxes lead to the first pylon of Karnak Temple. In ancient times there were three avenues of sphinxes combined length of 3.5 kilometers. Each statue along the avenue is a seated sphinx with the Pharaoh standing between its paws and beneath its chin. The sphinxes represent Sun god Amun Re. These sphinxes, though not located in their original position, would once have extended as far as the second pylon, the main entrance to the temple. Each of the sphinxes has his name carved on the base.
