Photographer's Note

A portrait of a girl in a bright red scarf from Dahab, Egypt. She was walking around the beach with beads to sell, and I sat down with her and bought some things, as well as taking her portrait. In a previous version I had her hold the scarf up to her eyes to cover the face, but this version is all revealed.

Hello David,

I like this haunting portrait of the young girl. She bares her soul, so it seems, in those eyes. Although it is a very good image, one thing you might consider, is to crop the original photo with the vertical centerline passing through one eye of the subject. In 1998 the English born psychologist working in San Francisco, Christopher Tyler, discovered a remarkable principle. In all great single-subject portraits (by Leonardo, Rembrandt, in many portraits by van Gogh and even Picasso) the centerline passes through one eye.

wonderful portrait! Great compo, brilliant red colour, perfect light & shade on her face and scarf. I amazed to see the clarity and sharpness! One can see the reflections of the beach (and perhaps the photographer)in her eyes.

Wow!

This is larger than life style, the eyes are staring right at the viewer and I get scared :) I can see the look penetrate through me and beyond, it is a powerful glance.

Hi, David -

A haunting portrait indeed, as Bulent said. Totally crisp; you can see the dust and sand on her cheeks. Great framing, and the touch of background in the upper left was necessary, I believe, to complete the image. The reflection in her eyes seems almost at odds with the expression in her mouth.

Very powerful shot.

Hello Dave, When I first looked at this portrait I noticed the striking eyes & red scarf but I thought of something that I wanted to mention to you, I thought I had read it in some article somewhere, but Bulent has already made mention of it, on second thought it may very well be his comment about these famous painters that I read somewhere else & remembered.
Nice colourful, pin sharp & very expressive image.
