Photographer's Note
Rabelados, (rebels) are a religious community living within the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. Most Rabelados community currently lives in Espinho Branco, consists of about 2000 people, the community leader is Moses Lopes Pereira.
The accommodation is very simple and Rabelados refuse symbols of modernity, tends assuming a millenarian nature. It is principally engaged in agriculture, fishing and crafts.
Rabelados formed from groups that rebelled against the reforms in the liturgy of the Catholic Church in the 1940s, and isolated from the rest of society, going to perform their ancestral traditions underground.
Were marginalized by the rest of society, denounced and persecuted, many were banished us to other islands and have even been arrested.
Required to form cohesive groups to survive, Rabelados took refuge in mountainous areas of difficult access and were preserving the religious and cultural traditions and the independence from the Catholic hierarchy and political power.
