Photographer's Note
This picture has been taken on Fogo, the only Island in Cape Verde with an active Volcano (about 2800m): the Pico.
The ascent takes about 3.5 hours from the village of Portela (on the left, next to the Pico's shadow) for 1000m difference in height. The descent is very fast and fun because it's possible to run on the "pouzzolane" (some kind of volcanic sand).
The picture show the Caldeiras with the only two villages next to the Pico: Portela and Bangaeira (one next to the other on the left part of the picture).
The last eruption happend in April 1995 during the night from 2nd to 3rd. Both villages have been evacuated (no injured people).
This picture is composed by 3 photos.
