Photographer's Note

António's photo and note prompted me to post this boring scene: August 1, 2006, 02:15 AM, in the waiting room of the brand new Praia International Airport (RAI), Santiago Island. The Boeing of TACV - Cabo Verde Airlines is already there, but the passengers still have to wait. Meanwhile an official went around talking and checking the passengers' documents, in order to save time before everything is ready to begin the embarking, to go to Lisbon.
António's event happened also in Cape Verde, maybe not so usual nowadays. Anyway, the relationship between passengers, airplane crews and airport staff, it's still a warm, often familiar one.
There's no post-processing in this picture; the room was indeed dark. Air conditioning was switched off and illumination was kept to a minimum, in order to save electricity because there was a power outage in town and the airport had to use its own emergency generators.
My first title for this photo was a boring night, as any air traveler can imagine.

It's interesting to see the new airport in Praia. They had just started to build it when I was there. Yes, a boring night, but at least you were inside, with chairs, at night. I remember waiting for more than six hours in the hot sun (9:00am - 3:00pm) for the boat from Brava to Fogo. No shade, and only my suitcase to sit on. :)
P.S. I love that guy’s shirt (fatu mundjaku).

Ha,ha, boa Francisco. Gosto do post e da história, na sequência do 'post' do António. Já fui ler a tua crítica lá e confesso que também é deliciosa. Acho que não me importava nada de viver num sítio assim, onde tudo anda mais devagar ;-)
No entanto isto parece uma sala de espera de embarque igual a tantas outras e de facto bastante aborrecida. Já o café do António é mais simpático :)))
Acho que a tua perspectiva está porreira. Embora goste de ver o cenário lá fora, acho que uma de frente com as caras "aborrecidas" das pessoas, seria mais interessante.

Good night capture, Fernando! I like the organization - officials are checking the docuuments while passangers are sitting. Up to now I've seen only the opposite scene - passengers are quing before a desk with a sitting official...

Hola Francisco! Muy en la onda documental de tu fotografia . Me venia a la cabeza una cancion de Manu Chao y el frenesi del viaje , los sitios de paso , equipajes , horas intempestivas ...Generan muchas sensaciones , para mi excitantes , a veces en muchos viajes recuerdo casi mas las conversaciones en el tren , las paradas de autopista , las lecturas de bus , la nueva gente ...La foto esta bien tomada, la maleta del chico se parece a la mia .

a very familier scene to me. i do live in airports it seems YUK! although the privilages of travel are priceless. the only thing different for me that it is never boring since we are kept busy flying thru sever weather and turbulent passengers :)

somehow airport's photos are not that popular as we would like them to be... i think that there was a good opportunity in that airport to wait for some extra "action" with passengers... what you had - was a good waiting point, good light both indoor and outside, on the field ...
just missing some small "kick"...

Só agora, ao rever o meu tema sobre aeroportos é que eu reparei nas tuas participações. Obrigado por teres adicionado ao tema.
É evidente que os aeroportos não são todos iguais mas têm uma coisa em comum que é serem todos "great" no momento da partida!!!
Aqui, gosto da tranquilidade aparente e, claro está, da camisa do tipo da direita.
