The Banana Street located in the Old Town on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde was the first street urbanized by Europeans in Africa and at the height of the colonial era had about five hundred houses
Ribeira Grande de Santiago, called "Old City", a World Heritage site, was founded in 1462 and was the first capital of the island of Santiago and the historical cradle of Cape Verde. It was the first city built by Europeans in sub-Saharan Africa has been a profitable point of the slave trade during that colonial period was the construction of numerous monuments of great cultural wealth.
