Mass Transit, a photo from Brava, Sotavento

Photographer's Note

Location: This is the road from Vila Nova Sintra to Fajã de Agua, on the island of Brava, in Cape Verde. Brava is the smallest inhabited island of Cape Verde with an area of only 64 km². The population in 2001 was only 4,296.

About the photo: You can't see them all, but there are 13 people in the back of that little Toyota. For about $15 you can hire a driver to take you and as many people as can possible fit into his truck to the other side of the island and back. He'll either stay with you the entire day, or you can arrange a time for him to pick you up (this includes gas and everything). When I was there in 2000 there was probably no more than 20-25 vehicles on the entire island.

I took this photo over the roof of the truck I was riding in using a cheap point and shoot camera. So any critiques about bad photo quality will fall on deaf ears, but other comments or critiques are more than welcome. I'm mainly posting this to showcase a place in the world that has yet to be represented here on TE.

Maybe it isn't exactly at the technical quality of some of your other stuff, but this piece really is in keeping with the spirit of TE. I like how low the truck is, but maybe it would have been nice to keep it a little bit farther right--most of the cliff at right doesn't add a whole lot to the picture, and something about the picture (maybe the sliver of sky) leaves me wanting to see something more on the left. Altogether a very interesting picture--thanks for representing the island of Brava!

Nice shot of transportation in Brava.
Some days before I had the same situation in Santo Antao and I enjoyed it much.

Beautiful capture of this road in th emiddle of the nature !
I don't know Brava but it reminds me the roads of Santo Antao even if the island is greener.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for posting this picture from Cabo Verde. If any people in the world was given even a cheap digital camera... we would have a different view of our planet in TE... and certainly much more from Africa.

I don't care much about technical details. The most important is that you show the reality of Cape Verde. This scene can be seen in any of the islands. You captured it very well here.
