Photographer's Note

Old shop of Juliana Tavares in downtown Mindelo, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde.
A mercearia (an old-fashioned word in Portuguese) used to mean mainly a grocery store. But nowadays Juliana Tavares’ shop seems to sell just second-hand stuff, especially for boats.
As the sun sets behind Monte Cara, there is always time for a chat at Juliana’s door, or elsewhere in town, whenever you meet a friend. The woman on the stool, a rabidante, seems not happy with her cookies selling. Even the cat seems bored.
Usually, time goes by very slowly on these islands.
